I belong to a very religious family also I have this rich fondness for varied forms of art and architecture hence, Khajuraho tours was always on my ‘must visit places’ list. My Khajuraho package was planned for the month of November which is considered the best time to visit the place and accordingly all the arrangements were made possible expediently by my travel agent. Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is renowned for its archeological heritage.

The city of temples, Khajuraho is one of the best tourist destinations for lovers of ancient art forms. The city is renowned for its exquisitely carved temples in stone and hence, is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Famous for their artistic excellence these Khajuraho temples are classified into three groups, the Western, Eastern and Southern group of temples. My Khajuraho tour of temples was most fascinating and picturesque one as it provided enormous opportunities for exploring the history of Khajuraho temples.

Always accompanied by my tour operator in Khajuraho, I was able to experience the city more intricately. The Jardine Museum, now known as the Archaeological Museum has preserved the beauteous sculptures in the form of an open- air museum. The groups of temples of Khajuraho are built of sandstone and each belongs to different sect, the Shiva, Vaishnava and Jain sects. The temples are designed in such a manner that they open to East, the ceilings are carved with geometrical and floral designs and all the temples contain a rising tower.

The beautiful monuments of Khajuraho temples, showcases a time when Khajuraho art was at its zenith. My personal favorite temple in this Khajuraho tour was the Kandariya Mahadeo which is the largest of them all. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and its pillar, ceilings and entrance is adorned with exquisite carvings that left me spellbound. Another site that caught my attention was the Lakshamana temple. Part of Western group of temples this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and its sanctum is adorned with a three- headed idol of Vishnu’s incarnations.

The temples of Khajuraho are carved with erotic art forms on the outer walls and also a depiction of Indian society of that period. These historic monuments brought the past alive right in front of my eyes as they depict the mundane life in the most artistic way. Thus, my Kajuraho, India tour was surely a delightful experience for which I cannot thank my tour operator enough.
